Animal of the Week December 13, 2004 -- A new macaque!
Macaca munzala (Arunachal macaque, munzala). In one of the earliest AOTWs I reported the discovery of a newly described species of monkey in northern India. The Arunachal macaque from Arunachal Pradesh lives at altitudes of up to 3500 m, making it one of the highest-dwelling of all the monkeys. It is larger than most other macaques and has a shortened tail. People native to the region call the monkey munzala, hence the species name.
What a lovely monkey.
